updating your living room

Sometimes the rooms we live in day in and day out start to lose their sparkle and feel a bit outdated.  Here are my top five tips for updating your living room without starting from scratch.

  1. Find or create a focal point for the room. This could be an existing fireplace or a TV area. If the room has both, put the TV over the fireplace. Stand back and look at the layout of the room. Is the furniture arranged in a conversational grouping? Or is everything lined up along the walls so that the middle of the room looks like an empty dance floor? Bringing the furniture off the walls and into the room creates a friendly, inviting space, and makes the room seem bigger.
  2. What’s your color palette for the room? I like blues and greens with little pops of orange or yellow. You might like a monochromatic theme with various shades of the same color.  Whatever you are drawn to, find color swatches and keep them with you when you’re out shopping.  When you see something that catches your eye, check it against your color scheme.  It might be adorable, but pink, and won’t fit in my room.  Pass, and save your money for something that will work.
  3. What about the flooring? Is it past its prime? If you’re renting, what about an area rug that you can take with you if you move? If you own your home, consider options like hardwood or less expensive engineered wood? Carpet can be a relatively inexpensive option in some rooms. Look for a neutral color that you’ll want to live with for a while. A change in the flooring is a sure way of updating your living room.
  4. Art, lighting and accessories are where you can really have fun and add personality to the room. Armed with your color palette, shop at Theshowroomng.  Look for paintings, throw pillows and home decor that complement each other.  Find big pieces of art in your colors and subject matter that reflects the vibe you want. Lighting is key to making a room feel inviting.  A rule of thumb for table lamps is that they should be at least 28” high in order to bring enough light into the room.
